about

In Vampire: The Masquerade lore, vampires adopt the term Kindred to describe themselves, to better help them hide amongst the mortals. They dominate the western world, but there is a small flock of vampires that reside in Africa called Laibon. In other words, Kindred of The Ebony Kingdom. This cue is meant for episodes about them.

The origin story of Laibon is not too different from the regular Kindred, but different enough for it to carry its own weight and gravitas. When I read this story in the sourcebook 'Kindred of The Ebony Kingdom', I felt a great sadness than I did reading the origin story of the vampires of the Western world, which was something I wanted to capture with this long cue, which can be heard in the key of the piece (F#m) and the use of mode mixture, to emotionally trouble the listener.

As this cue is meant to accompany the podcast episodes regarding the Laibon, the African vampires, I wanted to capture an African flavour, whilst keeping it 'on-brand' with the Lore By Night sound and emotions. This is why I use the Marimba and Celeste (the former often associated with the continent) to play in alternating time signatures of 3/4 and 7/8, and everything else is playing in 4/4, creating a polyrhythm, which is something heard in a lot of African music. The use of exciting percussion is more prominent here than any other cue in either Lore By Night soundtrack to date.
