about

This was composed for a "Wraith: The Oblivion" oneshot ran by The Lore By Night Podcast Guy using material found in "The Great War" book. As the name would imply, this game (and indeed the book in question) is placed against World War 1 as a backdrop. Destruction, emotional turmoil and isolation were some of the themes discussed and a musical theme encapsulated said emotions. This to me meant diving into the Nihil that is orchestral writing. Luckily, this is very much a comfortable style of writing for me.

This piece is very much led by the brass section, particularly the French Horns & Trombones, emulating the sorrowful brass that play by The Cenotaph on Armistice Day. Brass writing of this particular style feels respectfully mournful to me. Putting it in the key of A minor felt appropriate, as I have always felt that to be a sad, yet reflective key.

The modulation to E minor in the second half of the piece is meant to reflect upon the emotional destruction that is indeed The First World War and the harrowing turmoils in the underworld, the powerful Maelstroms that tear up the (under)landscape, the strings washing over everything.
